A comment about Toke Makinwa’s pregnancy and child led to heavy back-and-forth on X today.
It started when a user responded to a general relationship discussion and mentioned Toke, saying she once encouraged women to be independent but now “nobody even know who give her belle.” The user wrote:

Toke replied immediately:
“You are M*D.”
The conversation escalated, with Toke explaining that people can say anything about her, but once her child is mentioned, she will not stay calm. She tweeted:
“Listen, I can take any rubbish you throw my way but once you talk about my child, all bets are off. Leave me TF alone.”
She went on to address the wider issue of how women’s choices are constantly policed:
“To be a woman in Nigeria is exhausting. Once a woman’s choice doesn’t sit well with some men’s ego, they act like she failed. Some of you need to heal from your upbringing.”
Toke ended her responses by emphasizing that she won’t be “the bigger person” in situations like this.
