The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has openly criticized part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s October 1 Independence Day speech, calling the section on national security misleading and detached from reality.
During the November Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption City Campground in Ogun State, Adeboye—widely known as “Daddy G.O.”—expressed concern over the president’s claim that displaced Nigerians had safely returned to their communities. “When I heard my in-law’s speech, I almost said something. The person who wrote that speech doesn’t mean well for him,” he remarked. “The very next day after the speech, a traditional ruler was killed in Kwara or Kogi.”
The cleric, who rarely comments on political issues, emphasized that leaders must be guided by truth and humility. He warned that advisors who hide harsh realities from a president are doing a disservice to both the leader and the nation. “When those around a leader hide the truth, they lead him into darkness,” he cautioned.
Adeboye’s remarks resonate with many Nigerians who feel the government’s official narrative on security conflicts with daily experiences of violence, abductions, and displacement. Social media users and analysts have praised him for speaking candidly, framing his intervention as a moral reminder to the presidency to prioritize honesty and transparency.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to continue praying for their leaders while advocating for truthful governance. “This is not about politics,” he said. “Our people are still in pain, and insecurity is real. Those who counsel the president must tell him the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Only then can Nigeria rise again.”
