UK Based Catholic Priest Drags Sheikh Gumi To ICC After He Said “Herdsmen Are Not Like IPOB”

A UK-based Catholic priest, Rev. Nick Donnelly, has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi following a viral video in which Gumi compared armed herders to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Donnelly made the appeal in a social media post, according to a report by Daily Post on Monday, November 24, 2025.

In the circulating video, Sheikh Gumi is heard contrasting the two groups, reportedly saying: “Herdsmen are not like the Indigenous People of Biafra; they are kidnapping children to make money. Let’s be fair with them.” The comment has sparked debate online, with critics accusing the cleric of appearing to rationalise criminal activities linked to some armed groups in northern Nigeria. Gumi, in past interviews, has said his engagements are aimed at encouraging dialogue and reducing violence.

Reacting to the video, Rev. Donnelly argued that the statement amounted to support for actions he considers criminal. In his post, he claimed that the ICC should examine whether the comments fall under offences related to crimes against humanity. His call has further intensified long-running public conversations surrounding Gumi’s mediation style and the controversies it often generates.

Gumi has previously defended his outreach efforts as an attempt to understand grievances and promote peace, while many critics maintain that his approach sometimes blurs the line between mediation and justification. The ICC has not issued any response to Donnelly’s petition at the time of this report.
