Walewale MP condemns alleged military assault on journalist, civilians

The Member of Parliament representing Walewale has strongly condemned what he describes as an unprovoked attack by certain military personnel on a journalist and multiple civilians within the Walewale township.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the MP claimed that soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a truck from Bolgatanga to Tamale halted in Walewale at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26, and assaulted the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General along with other civilians without any provocation.

The MP further stated that the soldiers also vandalised property belonging to residents, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, instilling fear and anxiety in the town.

He additionally alleged that the journalist was held for over four hours following the assault and that evidence of the injuries documented on the journalist’s phone was obliterated.

“In the case of the reporter for Media General, he was detained for more than four hours after being assaulted, and evidence of harm caused to his body, which he had taken with his phone, was destroyed,” the statement said.

Mr. Abdul-Kabiru pointed out that initial enquiries with the Walewale District Police Command and the military present in the area revealed that the personnel involved were neither recognised nor officially assigned to the township.

“This is not the first time such atrocities have been visited on innocent civilians in Walewale and its environs without any cause,” he remarked, recalling a similar incident in February 2025 that involved the same journalist and others.

Describing the alleged actions as intolerable, the MP cautioned that unchecked military violence could result in significant civil-military discord.

“This culture of military brutality, which has become the order of the day, is a dangerous degenerative development when left unchecked by the Military Command,” he warned.

He dismissed claims that the assault was connected to recent security issues, asserting that residents had remained composed and law-abiding despite their dissatisfaction with the management of the Bawku conflict.

“I therefore roundly condemn this barbaric, unprofessional, and infantile show of brute force by these men in uniform on innocent civilians without any provocation whatsoever,” he said.

The Walewale MP has urged the Acting Minister of Defence to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The wholesale abuse of the people and the general application of force to all civilians is unacceptable and must be checked,” he added.
