“We buried over 2000 people during the Sharia crisis; In 2002, I buried over 300 people” —Rev. Hayab

Reverend Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State, has reflected on decades of sectarian violence in Northern Nigeria, describing the loss of life as “beyond imagination.” Speaking in an interview with News Central TV on Thursday, November 13, 2025, the cleric said the country has experienced a slight improvement in security under President Bola Tinubu when compared to earlier years of unrest.

Rev. Hayab, who has long been involved in peace and humanitarian work, said that while killings and insecurity persist, the scale of bloodshed has reduced compared to previous decades. “When Tinubu came, we even had some small relief — not complete, but at least a shift,” he explained.

He recalled some of the darkest moments of his ministry, including mass burials following the Sharia crisis in 2000, where he said over 2,000 lives were lost. Two years later, he buried more than 300 victims of another wave of violence. “In the past, I was burying people in hundreds — 50 or 30 every week,” he said solemnly.

Rev. Hayab noted that these tragic events remain a painful reminder of Nigeria’s need for unity and sustained peace efforts.
