Primate Elijah Ayodele has raised concerns over the role of former military officer and Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi in Nigeria’s security landscape, warning that his actions could inadvertently amplify the influence of terrorists. The cleric shared his message in a video posted on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
Ayodele cautioned that the Nigerian government must ensure Gumi does not operate without oversight, emphasizing that protecting him at this critical time could embolden insurgents and other criminal elements. “Allowing such activities could undermine the efforts of the military and security agencies to stabilize affected regions,” he said, noting that any negligence could have far-reaching consequences for national security.
According to Ayodele, Gumi’s interactions with bandits and insurgents have, intentionally or not, given them undue leverage, encouraging continued attacks across the country. He urged the government to act decisively, ensuring that no individual—regardless of influence or status—compromises the safety of Nigerian citizens.
The cleric called on political and security leaders to prioritize the nation’s security over personal interests, warning that inaction could trigger public outrage and further destabilization in affected areas.
Ayodele concluded by stressing that the responsibility lies with the government to prevent terrorists from appearing more powerful than they are. He emphasized that prompt and decisive action could save lives, restore order, and uphold law and justice.
