Peter Ameh, General Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has criticized what he described as a “lack of empathy” by Nigeria’s leadership, following Vice President Kashim Shettima’s appearance at a public event in Kogi State a day after General M. Uba was killed by terrorists.
In a statement shared with Symfoni TV, Ameh argued that such actions reflect broader issues within the country’s governance. He said the incident highlights a leadership style that often prioritizes political optics and personal interests over the wellbeing of citizens, especially amid rising insecurity across Nigeria.
Ameh recalled that while General Uba’s death or abduction by terrorists was a national tragedy, the vice president represented President Bola Tinubu in Kogi the next day and was publicly seen dancing Makosa. According to Ameh, this behavior signals an alarming absence of compassion and respect for human life.
He further criticized government responses to previous attacks, including the visit of President Tinubu to Benue following the Yelwata attack, where over 200 people were killed. Ameh described the celebratory reception during the visit as “a national embarrassment” that undermines public trust and the country’s international image.
“This is disheartening,” Ameh said. “There was no empathy, no compassion. We need leaders who value life, who understand that even one death diminishes the image of this nation.”
