PDP chieftain Oladimeji Fabiyi has refuted claims that former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike played a major financial role in sustaining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Fabiyi argued that Wike’s spending was aimed at advancing his personal political ambitions rather than strengthening the party.
Fabiyi maintained that the true financial backbone of the PDP has always been former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He recalled that Atiku provided ₦500 million in 1999 to rescue the party during a financial crisis and was instrumental in funding the establishment of the PDP national secretariat—a structure he said current party actors like Wike, Seyi Makinde, and Bala Mohammed now fight over.
He described it as ironic that the same individuals who once relied on Atiku’s contributions later worked against him politically. Fabiyi accused Wike of using money mainly to secure loyalty from figures like Umar Damagum and suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, alleging that such actions contributed to destabilising the party.
Speaking further, Fabiyi insisted that Wike should present evidence of any direct financial support to grassroots structures. He argued that the former governor only backed activities that aligned with his political agenda, not the overall development of the PDP.
