Nigerian rapper and music executive, Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I Abaga, has opened up about why he would prefer to raise his future children in Nigeria rather than abroad.
The celebrated hip-hop artiste, in a recent interview, said that Nigeria’s strong sense of family, community, and shared responsibility makes it a more suitable environment for raising children compared to some Western countries.
According to him, the communal system deeply rooted in Nigerian culture provides emotional, moral, and physical support for parents in ways that are often absent in more individualistic societies.
M.I explained that one of the biggest advantages of raising children in Nigeria is the presence of extended family members who are always willing to help with childcare and other responsibilities. He noted that this form of collective parenting makes family life less stressful and gives children a deep sense of belonging.
“There are a lot of things appealing about home, especially because we’re already ingrained in that system.
There’s a lot of support as well. I feel it’s very difficult for parents here,” the rapper said. “But if you have family, now you have enough people that can stay at home and support you. But it’s not easy, man.”
The “One Naira” crooner contrasted this with life abroad, particularly in the United States, where people often have to juggle long work hours with limited support systems. He pointed out that in such societies, many parents face isolation and exhaustion because family members are not readily available to assist.
M.I noted that while Western countries may offer better infrastructure, economic opportunities, and exposure, they often lack the warmth and togetherness that come with African family structures.
He believes that the Nigerian communal lifestyle instills values such as respect, empathy, and a strong connection to one’s roots qualities he wants his children to grow up with.
He further stated that raising children in Nigeria allows them to develop a clear understanding of their identity and heritage before being introduced to foreign cultures.
According to him, this balance helps young people appreciate their origins and navigate global experiences with confidence.
Although M.I Abaga clarified that he is not currently making concrete plans for a family, he emphasized that the cultural richness and unity found in Nigeria are among the country’s most underrated strengths. “Nigeria’s close-knit culture remains one of its greatest advantages when it comes to raising children,” he said.
M.I, who has long been an influential voice in Nigeria’s music and creative industry, is known for his thoughtful insights on social and cultural issues.
Over the years, he has used his platform to discuss identity, purpose, and the value of staying connected to one’s roots themes that continue to resonate strongly with his fans both at home and abroad.
