Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has sparked conversation online after firmly stating that she does not believe her husband, Femi Atere, should have a female best friend.
The fashion entrepreneur, who announced her marriage to Atere in October 2023, went on to celebrate their union with grand traditional and white wedding ceremonies held in Akwa Ibom and Lagos in 2024. Since their high-profile wedding, the couple has remained in the public eye, often drawing attention for their open discussions about marriage and relationships.
Speaking during an interview on Off The Top, Veekee James shared her personal beliefs about boundaries in marriage, explaining that she considers herself her husband’s sole confidante and closest companion. According to her, the concept of a married man maintaining a deeply personal friendship with another woman does not align with her understanding of marital commitment.
“A man can have a female best friend, but my husband can never. I am my husband’s only best friend for life,” she said.
James further explained that she does not see the need for her spouse to have another woman occupying such an emotionally significant role in his life. In her view, marriage is meant to be an exclusive partnership where both parties find their deepest emotional connection in each other.
“He cannot have me and another; it is just me. Any man who wants to can have a female best friend, but my husband is the exception because it simply doesn’t make sense to me,” she added.
Beyond her personal marriage, the designer extended her views to married women in general, arguing that a wife should prioritize emotional closeness and companionship with her own husband rather than seeking it elsewhere. She stressed that marriage should be a safe space where spouses rely on each other for comfort, support, and understanding.
“Even if the lady is married, she should be her husband’s best friend. Her husband should be her solace, her hiding place and her refuge,” James said.
She questioned the rationale behind a woman forming such a close bond with another person’s husband, insisting that it creates unnecessary emotional overlap and potential conflict. From her perspective, there should be clear boundaries to protect the sanctity of marriage.
“Why is she looking for a best friend in my husband? It is not possible. There is no space for that. He does not have room for such; he is occupied with me,” she stated.
Veekee James’ comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users applauding her stance on marital exclusivity, while others argue that platonic friendships should not be restricted by marriage. Nonetheless, the designer has remained unapologetic about her views, emphasizing that they reflect her personal values and the understanding she shares with her husband.
In recent weeks, James has also opened up about the emotional challenges she faced following allegations that she “snatched” her husband from a friend. According to her, the claims took a serious toll on her mental health, leaving her in tears for days and pushing her close to depression.
Despite the controversy, the fashion designer continues to speak candidly about her experiences, using her platform to express her beliefs about love, loyalty, and emotional boundaries in marriage. For Veekee James, marriage is not just a union of two people, but a commitment that demands exclusivity, trust, and emotional intimacy without external interference.
