According to our reporter, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Olisa Agbakoba has revealed why many state governors rush to Abuja every month to collect printed banknotes to pay civil servants.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Agbakoba said the problem lies in Nigeria’s over-centralized system of government, where too much power and financial control are concentrated in the hands of the presidency.
He explained that most states depend entirely on federal allocations because they lack true autonomy and viable sources of revenue. “Abuja has become the centre of competition because all the power is there,” he said. “My local government in Onitsha has no power at all.”
According to our reporter, Agbakoba noted that out of the 36 governors, only a few—particularly in Lagos and Rivers—are actively driving development, while most rely on funds printed and shared monthly by the Central Bank.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to take the lead in restructuring the country’s system to allow states more power and independence, saying true progress will only come through devolution and a reformed constitution.
