Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has criticized a recent standoff between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and military personnel in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, describing it as a serious embarrassment and a threat to governance in the nation’s capital.
The incident reportedly took place when soldiers blocked the minister and FCTA officials from accessing a disputed piece of land. The troops were said to be acting on instructions from former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd), who allegedly began development on the land without proper ownership documents.
Olayinka recounted the moment the minister called the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) during the altercation. “That is why I said this is an embarrassment, and it truly is. The minister called the Chief of Defence Staff and handed the phone to the officer. I saw how the officer received the phone and spoke to the Chief—it was shocking and embarrassing,” he said.
He added that the behavior of the officers undermines the authority of the FCT Administration and sets a worrying precedent for governance. Olayinka stressed that no individual, regardless of rank or former position, is above the law and urged security agencies to maintain discipline and respect for civil authorities to ensure order and accountability within the Federal Capital Territory.
