Prominent Kalabari leader Asari Dokubo has criticized the military’s involvement in protecting private properties, following the recent confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Navy officer A.M. Yerima. Dokubo made the remarks in a video aired on Facebook.
He described the military’s role in private property protection as inappropriate and a deviation from their constitutional duties. “Let’s come to the Wike issue. It is very wrong for the young military man to stand there. Are military people supposed to leave their barracks to guard private properties? Is that what they signed up for?” Dokubo asked.
Dokubo further noted that while Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges, including insurgency, some officers are being assigned tasks that distract from these urgent priorities. He warned that such practices undermine the integrity of the armed forces and weaken their capacity to respond to national security threats.
The Kalabari leader emphasized that military personnel should remain focused on their constitutional duties rather than being deployed to protect private interests, highlighting the broader implications for national security.
