In a recent interview on Arise News, Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor addressed the confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Naval Officer Yerima. He emphasized that the military uniform represents the authority of the state, regardless of the individual wearing it.
Speaking on the matter, General Irabor said, “The uniform is not about who is wearing it; it represents the authority of the state. Whether he is a small boy or not, it is the authority of the state. It is even more significant when it involves a commissioned officer with a presidential commission. Disparaging comments in such instances undermine the oath taken and are therefore wrong.”
He further explained that legal frameworks exist to address concerns about misconduct. “Law has two ends. In military law, we are taught that to establish a crime, two elements must be present. If there is any reason to believe an action is wrong, there are established channels to address it, following the rule of law,” Irabor added.
Observers say the statement highlights the importance of respecting military authority and the legal processes available for addressing disputes within the armed forces. The incident has continued to generate debate across social and political platforms in Nigeria.
