Senator Adams Oshiomhole has raised concerns over what he describes as the Senate’s growing tendency to approve executive bills without proper scrutiny. The former Edo governor made his point firmly during proceedings in the red chamber, addressing Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“I am not a rubber stamp senator,” Oshiomhole declared, highlighting his objection to the fast-tracking of money bills and supplementary budgets with minimal debate. He stressed that the Senate’s role is to make laws, not to simply echo executive proposals.
According to sources close to the senator, Oshiomhole has been reviewing clauses of various bills in detail, identifying areas of potential executive overreach. His frustration came to a head when Akpabio moved to fast-track yet another bill, prompting Oshiomhole to rise on a point of order. “Mr President, I respect the office, but I will not respect any attempt to turn this Senate into a conveyor belt for pre-cooked laws,” he stated.
The chamber reportedly fell silent as colleagues took in the message. While Akpabio acknowledged the point with a calm smile, Oshiomhole’s intervention served as a clear signal that he intends to hold the Senate accountable and prevent legislative complacency.
