Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, has provided insights into the complex security challenges in North Central Nigeria. In a recent interview shared by Arise News, she emphasized that understanding the root causes of violence is key to promoting lasting peace in the region.
Addressing the recent attacks in Plateau State, Essiet described them as reprisal attacks, noting that such incidents are not simple calculations of revenge. “You should know this was a reprisal attack, and a reprisal attack is not a calculation of you kill two, I kill two,” she explained. She highlighted that historical grievances, land disputes, and communal mistrust often drive these violent episodes, rather than targeting any single religious group.
Essiet pointed out that both Christians and Muslims have been affected by the ongoing violence. She stressed the importance of addressing broader factors contributing to insecurity, including land grabbing, illegal mining, and terrorist activities. Government engagement with local communities, she said, is critical for dialogue, reconciliation, and the development of effective policy interventions.
According to Essiet, community engagement is part of the federal government’s strategy to listen to local concerns, document grievances, and restore peace and security across North Central states. She urged accurate reporting and measured responses to conflicts to prevent cycles of violence and promote coexistence.
