Chelsea Edge Palmeiras 2-1 to Reach Club World Cup Semi-Final

Chelsea have booked their spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a narrow 2-1 victory over Brazilian giants Palmeiras in a tense quarter-final battle.

The Blues took the lead in the 16th minute through Cole Palmer, who showcased his composure by beating two defenders before slotting the ball home.

Palmeiras hit back early in the second half, courtesy of a stunning strike from 18-year-old wonderkid Estevao Willian in the 53rd minute. The equaliser was especially notable, as Willian is set to join Chelsea in a £52 million deal.

Chelsea quickly regained the lead when Malo Gusto’s cross took an unfortunate deflection off Palmeiras defender Giay Agustin, resulting in an own goal that ultimately sealed the win for the Premier League side.

New £55 million signing Joao Pedro made his debut for Chelsea after completing a move from Brighton, while Liam Delap picked up a yellow card that will see him miss the semi-final due to suspension.

The victory came with a setback as club captain Reece James was forced to withdraw during warm-up due to injury, adding to Chelsea’s growing list of concerns.

Next up, Chelsea will face fellow Brazilian side Fluminense in the semi-final on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
