The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over what it describes as growing cases of discrimination against Christian students in some educational institutions across Northern Nigeria.
Speaking in a report published by Leadership on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, who chairs CAN in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, said many qualified Christian candidates are being denied admission into certain universities because of their faith.
He lamented that the situation has persisted for years, affecting families and communities who value education. Hayab also criticized the lack of chapels and worship centers for Christian students in several public schools, forcing many to hold services in classrooms or open spaces.
According to him, such practices make Christian students feel excluded in their own country. He called on government authorities and school administrators to promote equality and fairness, stressing that peace cannot thrive if discrimination is ignored.
“Our children are denied admission not because they are unqualified, but because they are Christians,” he said, urging leaders to take decisive action.
