Dele Farotimi Reacts to a Question on What the Soldier Should Have Done During Wike Confrontation

Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has commented on the viral video showing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confronting a soldier at a checkpoint.

In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter), Farotimi responded to questions about what the soldier should have done during the encounter. He stressed that a soldier’s primary duty is to remain composed and uphold the rule of law, regardless of provocation or the status of the individual involved. “A soldier is not trained to argue with a politician or any civilian in public. His job is to obey lawful orders, not to bow to intimidation. But when lawlessness is modeled from the top, discipline begins to erode,” he noted.

Farotimi highlighted that the confrontation reflects a broader problem of impunity and disregard for institutional hierarchy in Nigeria. He urged political officeholders to lead by example, demonstrating restraint in their interactions with security personnel. According to him, respect for the uniform should not depend on one’s power or position.
