Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially declared his intention to contest in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, stating that this time, he’s entering the race with full seriousness.
Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Al-Mustapha addressed critical national issues such as insecurity, poverty, and electoral credibility, while clarifying that his past attempts were simply to test the waters.
“God willing, I only tested it before, but this time I’m serious about running,” he said.
He also revealed efforts to engage the international community for tighter election monitoring in 2027, alleging that previous Nigerian elections were marred by manipulation.
“That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections, because election results are usually written,” he stated.
On the possibility of political alliances, Al-Mustapha made it clear he will not align with ideologies that conflict with his values or that could bring dishonor to the nation.
“If their ideology is different from ours, then I don’t want to be part of something shameful that would bring dishonor to the country with my involvement,” he asserted.
When asked whether he would consider stepping aside to support another prominent candidate like Atiku Abubakar, his response was firm:
“There is no possibility of our paths crossing politically, so there’s no need for that question.”
Al-Mustapha previously ran for president in 2019 and 2023, but failed to gain significant traction. His latest declaration, however, suggests a renewed and strategic approach ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, Al-Mustapha’s announcement is expected to stir conversations around security, governance, and electoral integrity.
