Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has shared a moving story about how a chance encounter with an elderly woman reshaped his understanding of public service and accountability.
Speaking on The Clarity Zone podcast, Obi revealed that the 80-year-old woman confronted him in church and boldly told him to leave the service, saying God would not hear his prayers because she was still owed her pension and gratuity.
Shocked by her words, Obi said he later visited the woman at her home despite her earlier warning not to come. He recalled how she welcomed him warmly and offered him roasted corn. During their conversation, she told him that failing to pay pensions was one of the worst forms of injustice, as retirees depend on those benefits to survive.
Obi said the encounter left a lasting impression on him. Motivated by her courage, he ensured that all outstanding pension and gratuity arrears in Anambra State were cleared before he left office—amounting to over ₦30 billion.
