“Nigeria Must Exercise Prudence And Genuine Reform” — Showunmi Warns After Trump’s Designation

According to our latest report, Segun Showunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to label Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) — a move allegedly tied to claims of religious persecution against Christians.

In a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Showunmi warned that this classification carries serious diplomatic and economic implications for Nigeria. He urged the government to act swiftly and wisely, stating that, “Nigeria must exercise prudence, foresight, and genuine reform to prevent a major diplomatic and economic crisis.”

According to Showunmi, the CPC tag is more than a symbolic gesture; it’s a red flag that can attract sanctions, travel restrictions, and damage to Nigeria’s international reputation. He added that the framework also targets individuals and institutions complicit in human rights abuses.

The PDP stalwart stressed that rather than dismiss Trump’s declaration as foreign interference, the Nigerian government should view it as a wake-up call to restore unity, justice, and tolerance.
