Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has highlighted the importance of lawful conduct following Tuesday’s confrontation between the minister’s team and military personnel at a disputed land site in Abuja.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, November 12, Olayinka described one of the military officers present as “unruly and arrogant,” noting that he insulted fellow uniformed personnel, referring to them as “bloody policemen.” The altercation arose from a long-standing land dispute involving retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd.), who was reportedly misled in a fraudulent land transaction in the Gaduwa district.
Olayinka explained that the land was originally allocated in 2007 to Santos Estate Limited for park and recreational purposes and marked as a road corridor, meaning no permanent structure was permitted. “In 2022, the company requested approval from the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority (FCTDA) to change the land’s use to commercial purposes. However, before any formal approval was granted, the company began subdividing and selling portions of the land, including to the retired naval chief,” he said.
He added that instead of seeking legal recourse after realizing he had been scammed, the retired naval officer reportedly used military influence to assert his claim, escalating tensions. Minister Wike and his team were confronted by armed soldiers during a visit, prompting protests from members of the minister’s entourage. The minister reminded the officers that “no one, regardless of rank, is above the law” and that intimidation would not be tolerated.
Olayinka emphasized that lawful orders must guide actions, cautioning, “Not all orders are meant to be obeyed simply because they come from a superior; they must be lawful. Any attempt to act above the law will not be tolerated.”
