Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has once again urged the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has now spent four years in detention.
In a statement issued on Friday in Enugu by its National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group appealed to President Bola Tinubu to exercise his constitutional powers and leverage diplomatic channels to secure Kanu’s release, citing equity, fairness, and inclusive justice.
Chukwu emphasized that June 2025 marks exactly four years since Kanu’s controversial arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.
He questioned the legitimacy of Kanu’s prolonged detention, stating, “The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system.”
He further argued that since the process of extraditing Kanu from Kenya has been widely criticized as unlawful, the legal grounds for his ongoing detention remain questionable.
“One wonders the rationale for detaining Kanu for four years without justice,” Chukwu added.
Ohanaeze’s renewed call comes amid growing appeals from civil society groups and international bodies demanding a fair resolution to Kanu’s case.
