Popular Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has revealed that she once struggled with cigarette smoking during her university days before making the bold decision to quit entirely.
Speaking in a recent interview with Chude, the “Johnny” hitmaker said curiosity initially pushed her to try smoking, but it soon became something she began to depend on — especially before bedtime.
“When I was in university, I tried smoking. It just didn’t work for me. Before it didn’t work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before I went to bed — I was getting addicted to that lifestyle,” Yemi confessed.
The singer said that although she kept the habit private, the need to hide it made her uncomfortable and ultimately inspired her to stop.
“In public, I would hide the cigarettes, and I just told myself, if I have to hide to do something, I won’t do it. I like to be aware of my decisions,” she added.
According to Yemi, the entire phase didn’t last up to a year, as she soon realised how damaging smoking could be to both her voice and health.
“Smoking for me didn’t last up to a year. I stopped because it wasn’t for me, and it could harm my voice,” she said.
She further revealed that, like anyone else, she sometimes feels tempted but remains firm in her resolve, describing herself as someone who sets strict boundaries and sticks to them.
Yemi Alade’s honest revelation has drawn praise from fans for her transparency and for using her story to inspire others battling similar habits.
