Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies, questioning whether the promised savings and benefits are reaching citizens. Speaking at a public event, Obi also responded to a controversial comment allegedly made by former US President Donald Trump, in which Nigeria was described as a “disgraced country.”
Obi urged Nigerians not to focus on the language used by Trump but to address the deeper issues highlighted in the statement, including widespread killings and insecurity. “The President of the United States has made a statement about Nigeria, and in that critical tweet, issues of genocide and killings were mentioned,” Obi said. “We are spending time debating whether the killings in Nigeria are genocide or not, instead of coming together to fight what is going on in our country.”
The former presidential candidate criticized the government’s economic management, noting that policies such as subsidy removal and currency unification have yet to improve citizens’ lives. “The government has removed subsidy and unified the currency, but why are these two good decisions not working for us?” he asked. Obi emphasized that citizens are still struggling despite these reforms and called for transparency in how public funds are utilized.
Highlighting misplaced priorities in governance, Obi pointed to neglect in critical sectors such as health. “Mothers can’t go to hospital and give birth without problems, and we are building bus stations. Is it the work of the government to build bus stations?” he questioned.
Concluding his remarks, Obi stressed that accountability and focus on citizens’ real needs must come before political posturing. Additional commentary, photos, and analysis of Obi’s statements are available on Newshost Buzz.
