Suspected Herdsmen Attack SGF Akume’s Village 48 Hours After President Tinubu’s Visit

Suspected Herdsmen have launched a deadly attack on Wannune Community in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, the hometown of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

According to Daily Post on 21st June 2025, the violent assault occurred just 48 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state to address the worsening state of insecurity.

The attack reportedly left many people dead and several others seriously injured. Residents described the situation as terrifying, with many fleeing into nearby bushes to escape the chaos.

A Youth Corps Member serving in the area recounted the horror, saying that the entire community had been thrown into panic as gunmen believed to be Herdsmen stormed the area in the early hours of the morning.

“Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please let Nigerians pray for us. The Herdsmen are ravaging the environment now,” the corps member stated in a desperate message calling for urgent help.

The renewed violence has cast doubt on the impact of President Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State, during which he ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to ensure the arrest of those responsible for previous killings in the state.

The President’s visit followed the gruesome massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 people were killed by suspected armed men. That incident triggered nationwide outrage and calls for justice.

Despite the Federal Government’s promises to curb the insecurity, the latest attack in Wannune highlights the persistent threat faced by communities in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria’s North-Central Region.

Residents are now appealing for a more proactive and sustained military presence in the area to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace.
