Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has hailed her landslide election victory as a win for democracy — despite mounting criticism from opposition parties and global observers.
According to the BBC (November 1, 2025), President Samia, who secured 97.66% of the votes in Wednesday’s poll, received her victory certificate on Saturday, describing the election as “free and democratic.”
She thanked the nation’s security forces for ensuring peaceful voting, condemning post-election protests as “unpatriotic acts” aimed at destabilizing the country.
“The government strongly condemns these violent incidents. They were not patriotic at all,” she said.
However, opposition parties and several Western nations — including the UK, Canada, and Norway — have questioned the credibility of the poll, citing media censorship, internet restrictions, and the detention of key opposition figures.
Reports from Dar es Salaam and other major cities indicate that protests turned violent, with several casualties allegedly recorded. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for restraint and accountability.
Still, President Samia remained defiant, saying the people had spoken.
“Tanzania has chosen peace, stability, and progress,” she declared.
The CCM leader, who first took office in 2021 following the death of John Magufuli, now begins a new term — one of the most dominant electoral wins in Tanzania’s history.
