The media made B’Haram popular, they have an arabic name, it means Western education is a sin—Salis

Salis Muhammad Abdulsalam, founder of the Displaced Women and Children Foundation, has criticized the Nigerian media for popularizing the name “Boko Haram,” arguing that the group’s Arabic name has been overlooked and misrepresented in public discourse.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Abdulsalam explained that the terrorist group’s original Arabic designation is Jama’atu Ahl as-Sunnah li-Da’awati wal-Jihad. He noted that by using the Hausa term “Boko Haram,” which translates to “Western education is a sin,” the media has reinforced a narrative that frames the insurgency primarily as a religious conflict.

Abdulsalam said, “The media made Boko Haram popular; they use their Arabic name, and they say Boko Haram means ‘Western education is a sin.’” He suggested that this framing has contributed to misconceptions about the nature and motives of the group, which extend beyond simple opposition to Western education.

The activist also addressed reports regarding alleged Christian persecution in Nigeria, asserting that claims of genocide have been exaggerated. He encouraged careful reporting and nuanced understanding of conflicts to prevent misrepresentation and social tension.
