Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian authorities to focus on practical solutions to the country’s security challenges, following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding violence against Christians. His comments were made during an interview on Symfoni TV.
Obi emphasized the seriousness of Nigeria’s current situation, noting that political debates over terminology should not distract from the fundamental problem. “We have a situation where somebody mentions something and instead of looking at the stark reality—are there killings? Yes, there are—we spend time debating whether it’s genocide or not,” he stated.
The former presidential candidate also recounted discussing the issue with military officials, including a general he met while traveling. He stressed that the focus should be on addressing the killings and organizing diplomatic and practical measures for support.
Obi’s remarks highlight the need for Nigerian leadership to prioritize actionable strategies over defensive arguments about international perceptions.
