Lere Olayinka, special adviser to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has claimed that retired Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo lacks a valid title deed for a disputed property in Abuja, raising questions about the recent confrontation between government officials and military personnel.
The dispute came to public attention on Tuesday when Minister Wike attempted to access a property linked to Gambo in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, only to be blocked by naval officers stationed at the site. Video footage circulating on social media showed a tense exchange between Wike’s security team and the naval personnel.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily via Channels Television on Wednesday, Olayinka alleged that Gambo has sought to assert control over the property through intimidation rather than following proper legal procedures. He questioned whether Gambo had submitted building plans to the FCT Development Control Office and if they were approved, emphasizing that due regulatory processes must be respected.
Olayinka urged Nigerians to scrutinize the situation, highlighting that disputes over land ownership in Abuja often spark tension when proper procedures are not adhered to. He said, “Vice Admiral Gambo does not have a title document showing that he owns the land; he does not own the land. Nigerians should ask him if he took his building plan to the Development Control Office and if it was approved.”
The incident has renewed debate over the involvement of the military in civil property disputes and the appropriate use of force in such situations. Authorities have yet to release a formal statement clarifying the legal ownership of the land or outlining next steps to resolve the matter.
