Walewale hospital discharges abandoned patient

The Walewale Municipal Hospital has discharged a 30-year-old man, Sambor Umar, after his family refused to take responsibility for his care.

Umar, who was admitted as a suspected thief, had been left at the hospital for a week without any family member showing up despite repeated phone calls from staff.

Hospital workers say Umar arrived unconscious with deep machete wounds after he was reportedly beaten in Wulugu in the North East Region during an attempted theft.

Medical staff managed to stabilise him, but after regaining consciousness, no relatives came to support his continued treatment or help with his discharge process.

According to reports, the family’s refusal is linked to a previous incident where Umar’s elder brother had to stand as surety for him in an earlier theft case.

Relatives are said to feel burdened and unwilling to take further responsibility, leaving the hospital to manage his care alone.

With no family contact and limited options, the hospital eventually discharged Umar to free up space and resources for other patients who needed urgent care.

His current whereabouts remain unclear.
