According to our report, former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has outlined steps Nigeria should take after being labeled a “Country of Particular Concern” by the United States over alleged religious persecution.
Ndume emphasized that Nigeria must proactively correct misconceptions and present its side of the story. “We should engage the American government with facts and figures, ensuring they hear the perspective of both the Nigerian government and the Muslim community,” he said.
The U.S. designation follows claims by former President Donald Trump that Christianity in Nigeria faces an “existential threat.” Ndume noted that violence affects all citizens, not just Christians, and criticized earlier failures by lawmakers to act diplomatically.
He urged immediate engagement with diplomats and the American embassy to accurately represent Nigeria’s situation, aiming to shift the country’s status and attract international support. His remarks reinforce President Bola Tinubu’s position that Nigeria guarantees religious freedom and that the label misrepresents the nation’s realities.
