Wike ignored Service Chiefs’ advice, Yerima acted lawfully and respectfully -Mattawalle

Defence Minister Bello Matawalle has weighed in on the public dispute between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Naval Officer Lieutenant Yerima, affirming that the officer acted professionally and within the law during the Abuja land confrontation.

Speaking during a media briefing on Saturday, Matawalle stated that Lt. Yerima carried out his duties respectfully, following instructions regarding the protection of the disputed property. “Our preliminary investigation shows that the officer acted lawfully, professionally, and respectfully,” he said. “There was no point where he insulted or confronted the minister. He simply insisted on carrying out his assigned duty. The Armed Forces will always defend any officer who conducts himself within the law.”

The Defence Minister also noted that prior guidance from the nation’s Service Chiefs had emphasized proper conflict-resolution protocols between political appointees and security personnel. According to Matawalle, these recommendations were overlooked, which contributed to the escalation of the incident.

Matawalle stressed that military personnel performing lawful duties must be protected by the state, regardless of the individuals involved in any disagreement. The statement underscores the importance of following established procedures and maintaining professional conduct in interactions between government officials and the armed forces.
