Veteran actor, lawyer, and former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s political future, warning that the only way to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 is through a united opposition.
Speaking on Arise TV, Okonkwo criticized recent endorsements of President Bola Tinubu and APC governors in the Northwest for a second term, calling it “shameful” given the country’s worsening insecurity and poverty.
“While people are being killed and children remain out of school, politicians are already chasing 2027. Democracy should be about people—not power grabs,” he said.
Okonkwo blamed the opposition’s disunity in 2023 for the APC’s win with less than 40% of the vote. He emphasized the need for a coalition driven by integrity, competence, and public welfare, not backdoor deals.
On reports of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar negotiating a joint ticket, he warned:
“Let the people decide—don’t cook up leadership arrangements in secret.”
Though he has distanced himself from the Labour Party over internal issues, Okonkwo revealed he is part of a new coalition that’s still forming—hinting at a future political force.
“We may not change the beginning, but we can change the end—and we will,” he concluded.
