Two senators and six members of the House of Representatives have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The senators are Allwell Onyesoh, who represents Rivers East, and Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South-East, and their defection was announced on the Senate floor during plenary.
To mark the occasion, the Senate temporarily relaxed its rules to admit the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, alongside other party officials, who were present to witness the defection.
The two lawmakers, widely seen as close allies of the FCT Minister and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, explained that lingering internal crises within the PDP pushed them to leave the party.
Their exit has strengthened the APC’s grip on the Senate, raising its number to 78 senators and giving it a clear majority in the chamber.
At the House of Representatives, six lawmakers from Rivers, all considered loyal to Wike, also defected from the PDP to the APC.
They include Dumnamere Robinson Dekor, who represents Khana/Gokana federal constituency and is a former deputy speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Others are Solomon Bob of Abua/Odual and Ahoada East, Hart Cyril from Degema/Bonny, and Victor Obuzor of Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema/Ndoni, who chairs the House Committee on Civil Societies.
The remaining defectors are Blessing Amadi of Port Harcourt II federal constituency and Felix Nweke, who represents Eleme/Oyigbo/Tai.
This comes a few days after Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara announced his departure from the PDP and his decision to join the APC.
