World Athletics has rejected a request by Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili to change her international allegiance to Turkey, effectively ending a move that had drawn attention across the global athletics scene.
The decision followed a detailed review by the governing body’s eligibility panel, which examined several applications submitted through the Türkiye Athletics Federation.
The requests were reportedly part of a broader effort by the federation to attract foreign athletes ahead of major global competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
World Athletics, however, raised concerns about the implications of such a strategy. In its ruling, the body emphasized that large-scale recruitment of athletes from other nations could weaken the foundation of international competition.
It warned that prioritising imported talent over local development risks discouraging countries from investing in grassroots programmes, while also limiting opportunities for emerging homegrown athletes.
Ofili’s attempted switch comes after a series of frustrations with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, which she had previously accused of administrative lapses.
The 23-year-old sprinter was notably affected by organisational failures that saw her miss key opportunities on the global stage, including events at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.
Despite those challenges, the rejection of her application means she remains eligible to represent Nigeria in international competitions.
The development has sparked mixed reactions, with some observers viewing it as a necessary step to protect the integrity of the sport, while others believe it limits athletes seeking better structures and support elsewhere.
In the wake of the decision, there are indications that Nigerian athletics authorities are keen to rebuild trust and create a more supportive environment for top talents like Ofili.
Her return presents an opportunity for renewed collaboration, as stakeholders aim to ensure that past administrative issues are not repeated.
With her future now firmly tied to Nigeria, attention will shift to her preparations for upcoming competitions. Ofili remains one of the country’s brightest prospects in sprint events, and expectations will be high as she looks to refocus and continue her rise on the international stage.
