Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem has addressed criticism trailing his recent visit to Benin City, Edo State, following reactions to remarks he made during the trip.

The veteran artiste had earlier toured parts of the state alongside Governor Godwin Obaseki, where he was shown several ongoing and completed projects. Speaking during the visit, Abdulkareem expressed admiration for the developments he witnessed, noting that he was impressed by the level of work being done.

He stated that his visit was driven by a desire to personally verify claims about the administration’s performance. According to him, what he saw exceeded his expectations, prompting him to encourage Edo indigenes, especially those in the diaspora, to return home and see the progress for themselves. He also expressed optimism that more achievements would become visible in the coming years.

However, his comments quickly sparked backlash online, with several social media users criticising him over his stance. Many questioned his motives and accused him of making politically influenced statements, leading to heated debates across digital platforms.

In response to the criticism, Abdulkareem released a new song in which he clarified the real reason behind his trip to Benin. He explained that his visit was primarily to support a friend during the opening of a club, adding that the venue had previously been shut down following his performance there days earlier.

The rapper’s explanation appears aimed at correcting the narrative and distancing himself from claims that his visit was politically motivated.

The controversy comes amid a history of political tensions and public reactions involving Edo State and prominent figures. In the past, personalities such as Israel DMW have openly criticised the state government, with calls for leadership changes over security concerns.

Similarly, actress Mercy Johnson faced backlash during the gubernatorial election period after publicly campaigning for candidate Monday Okpebholo, urging voters to support him.

Music star Davido also weighed in during the election season, criticising directives given to voters and expressing concerns about the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He cited personal ties to Edo State through his maternal lineage as the reason for his interest in the process.

His comments, however, drew a sharp response from fellow singer Cynthia Morgan, who challenged his connection to the state and urged him to stay out of local matters.

Abdulkareem’s recent experience highlights how celebrity involvement in politically sensitive conversations continues to generate mixed reactions, especially in an era where public figures are often scrutinised for their opinions and associations.
