The Lagos State Government has released fresh guidelines ahead of the reintroduction of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to commence on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the exercise will now hold on the last Saturday of every month across the state.

According to him, residents will be required to observe restricted movement during the sanitation window to enable proper cleaning of homes, surroundings, and drainage channels.

“The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month between the hours of 6:30 am and 8:30 am. During this period, there will be controlled movement across the state to allow residents to carry out thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings and drainage frontages,” he said.

Wahab stated that enforcement of the exercise would be strict, with several government agencies deployed to ensure compliance across all local government areas.

He listed participating agencies to include the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), as well as local government environmental officers.

“Conduct physical inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure compliance,” he added, warning that “defaulters will be sanctioned in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.”

The commissioner also disclosed that waste evacuation support would be provided during the exercise to ensure proper disposal of refuse generated by residents.

“LAWMA intervention trucks will go around to cart away bagged wastes generated during the exercise,” he said.

He further announced plans to introduce incentive-based programmes aimed at encouraging compliance and promoting healthy competition among communities.

“There will be rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street as part of efforts to encourage healthy competition and community participation,” Wahab said.

Residents were urged to actively support the initiative, with the government emphasizing collective responsibility in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

“We urge all residents to take ownership of this exercise and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos,” he added.

The upcoming sanitation exercise follows a symbolic flag-off earlier conducted along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor on March 14, signaling the full return of the programme.

The initiative is being revived nearly a decade after it was suspended in November 2016, following a court ruling that restricted statewide movement during enforcement hours.

While some Lagos residents have welcomed the decision, describing it as a positive step toward improving waste management and reducing flooding, others have expressed concerns over possible abuse of movement restrictions and have called for sustained public sensitisation.

The state government, however, maintains that the programme remains a key part of efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment across Lagos.
