Nigerian actress Wumi Toriola has stirred conversation online following a tense moment with influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa over how he addressed her during a public event in Lagos.

The incident, which has since gone viral, occurred at a social gathering on Saturday evening and was captured in a video now circulating widely on social media. In the clip, Toriola was seen interacting with fellow actresses Ini Edo and Eniola Ajao when Enioluwa approached to greet her.

As he stepped in, the influencer said, “Wumi how are you?” — a remark that appeared to immediately upset the actress.

Reacting sharply, Toriola questioned his choice of greeting and expressed displeasure at being addressed by her first name. She was also seen slightly pushing him away as she responded.

“Are you insane? did you just call my name? How dare you call me by my name?” she said.

Caught off guard, Enioluwa quickly attempted to clarify the situation, insisting that he had used a more respectful form of address.

“No no I didn’t say that. I said aunty Wumi how are you?” he replied.

Despite his explanation, the actress maintained her stance, emphasizing what she described as proper respect and cultural etiquette, particularly in public settings.

“You can’t greet me like that, you will have to prostrate to greet me. We are not mates,” she added.

The exchange has since generated widespread reactions online, with opinions divided among social media users. While some supported Toriola’s insistence on respect, especially within the context of Yoruba cultural norms, others criticised her reaction as excessive and unnecessary.

Amid the growing debate, the actress later addressed conversations surrounding her age, which had become part of the online discourse following the incident. Taking to her Instagram story, she dismissed claims and clarified her background.

“I saw people debating my age. Nor be everyone ise de gbo ooo. Na all my family get baby face. I finished secondary school in 2003. Do d maths. 16 nor dey enter uni that time,” she wrote.

Public records suggest that Enioluwa was born in July 1999, while Toriola was born in July 1988, placing an age gap between the two — a detail many online commentators referenced while discussing the situation.

The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing conversation around generational differences, respect, and cultural expectations in Nigeria’s entertainment space. While traditional norms often emphasize deference to elders, particularly in greetings, younger generations sometimes adopt more informal approaches, especially in urban and social media-driven environments.

As reactions continue to pour in, neither party has issued any further statement beyond their initial responses, leaving the public to interpret the encounter from their own perspectives.
