Police dismantle armed robbery gang in upper east; four arrested, two killed

The Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a suspected armed robbery gang operating in the Upper East Region, arresting four members while two others were killed during a special operation.

The operation, carried out on April 29, 2026, followed intelligence gathered by a special police team targeting a group believed to be behind a series of violent robberies across the region.

The suspects were apprehended at their hideout in Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District.

The four arrested suspects have been identified as Masawudu Kasim, Malik Baako Issah, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul Adam. Police say they are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.

During the operation, two other suspects,  Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu, sustained gunshot wounds in an exchange of fire with police and were later pronounced dead. Their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

A search conducted at the gang’s hideout led to the recovery of a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, which had been concealed in a motorbike.

Police also retrieved seven additional motorbikes believed to have been stolen during previous robbery operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the group was responsible for multiple violent attacks in the region.

The suspects reportedly confessed to carrying out a robbery attack on February 4, 2026, along the Zuarungu–Kongo road, during which a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, was shot and lost three fingers.

The gang is also believed to have attacked a cargo truck driver on the same route and carried out another robbery at the Kejetia mining site at Gbane on March 28, 2026, where a miner was robbed of cash and gold.

Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on violent crime and restore security in the Upper East Region.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for other accomplices, including a suspect identified only as “DJ,” who remains at large.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all individuals connected to the criminal network will be apprehended and made to face the full rigours of the law.
