Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, has announced his plans to run for the Bauchi South senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
He made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa published on Saturday, shortly after the Supreme Court canceled the national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki.
The PDP has been dealing with internal leadership problems, and there have been rumours that the governor might leave the party for another one, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the All Progressives Congress (APC).
On March 31, Mohammed met with ADC leaders, including Babachir Lawal, at the Bauchi Government House.
The next day, he also hosted Nentawe Yilwatda and Abba Yusuf, which increased speculation that he might switch parties.
However, talks between the groups ended on April 18 after they could not agree on how power would be shared.
During the BBC Hausa interview, Bala Mohammed said discussions about his next political step are almost finished.
He explained that a final decision on his direction will be announced within days, adding that while some PDP leaders will remain to handle ongoing issues, others may choose to run on different party platforms.
“With only a few days left, we are working to conclude discussions on where to move,” he said.
“The PDP leadership, including Tanimu Turaki, will remain to pursue the matter, while we give our supporters the opportunity to contest on other platforms. Within a week, we will make our position known in Bauchi.”
He made it clear that he is not interested in running for president, saying his focus remains on his senatorial bid.
“I have no interest in contesting for the presidency; in fact, we supported zoning it to the south for the sake of fairness within the PDP,” he said.
“However, I have decided to contest for the senate because the people of Bauchi-south have asked me to. They have put their hope in me, and as long as I am alive and healthy, I feel it is my duty to accept their call and serve.”
Mohammed also revealed that he has been in talks with opposition figures like Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi about possible cooperation.
“We are currently in talks with Kwankaso and Obi. While people asking us to team up and work together, remaining in the same political alignment is difficult because every state is unique,” he said.
“The issues we face are different, and the interests of the people vary significantly from one region to another.”
Speaking on the Supreme Court ruling, the governor said it did not favour any side in the PDP crisis.
“It is neither a total defeat for us nor a complete victory for the other side. While our Ibadan convention was nullified, their leadership was also set aside,” he said.
He added that the party’s board of trustees will manage its affairs for now until a new interim leadership is put in place following the court’s decision.
