According to a report by Vanguard on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed his appreciation for being married to a Yoruba woman, describing the Yoruba as one of the finest races among humanity.
He made this statement while addressing concerns that his potential administration in 2027 could be dominated by Hausa-Fulani interests.
Atiku praised his wife, Titi Atiku Abubakar, who hails from the Ijesa tribe in Osun State, referring to her as a jewel of inestimable value.
He emphasized that his marriage has given him a deep personal connection with the Yoruba community, which would influence his approach to governance if he becomes President.
In a statement released through his Media Consultant, Kola Johnson, Atiku assured that the interests of the Yoruba people would occupy a top priority in his policy-making.
He highlighted the importance of inclusivity and fair representation in leadership, signaling his intention to embrace diversity in governance.
Atiku also spoke about his family life, revealing the affectionate relationship he shares with his children.
He mentioned that his children sometimes call him “Baba Rere,” which means good father, reflecting the bond and care he shows them.
He encouraged all fathers to actively engage and nurture their children, stressing the role of family in shaping responsible citizens.
He reiterated that his personal and political life would reflect a commitment to fairness and respect for all ethnic groups in Nigeria.
By highlighting his marriage and family experiences, Atiku sought to counter claims that his leadership would favor a particular ethnic group over others.
Atiku’s comments underline his view that leadership should go beyond ethnic considerations, focusing instead on service, unity, and equitable opportunities.
His emphasis on the Yoruba people stems from his personal connection, but he stressed that it does not diminish his respect and duty to other communities across the country.
Through his statement, Atiku aimed to assure Nigerians that his potential presidency would be inclusive and family-oriented.
His emphasis on love for his children and respect for his wife illustrates a personal philosophy that values care, understanding, and fairness as key aspects of leadership.
He said: “My children with Titi sometimes called me “Baba Rere”, meaning good father. I am extremely in love with my children and serve as a good father to them as I urged every father to do the same to their children.
