The recent rescue of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State has sparked nationwide relief, but it has also opened fresh discussions about Nigeria’s security priorities. In a thoughtful and experience-driven analysis, a former Joint Task Force (JTF) commander has emphasized that saving victims’ lives will always take precedence over pursuing kidnappers during an active operation.
According to the ex-commander, the primary goal for any professional rescue mission is preservation of life. He explained that when hostages — especially children — are involved, the security forces must act with extreme caution. Any aggressive chase or confrontation with armed kidnappers could endanger the victims.
He noted that Nigerians often wonder why kidnappers escape after rescue missions, but he stressed that successful recovery of victims is already a major victory. Capturing criminals comes next — and often requires intelligence-led follow-up operations rather than rushed firefights.
Rescue First, Arrests LaterThe former JTF officer pointed out that kidnappers usually operate deep inside forests, using rough terrain, hidden trails, and human shields to their advantage. Attempting to capture them immediately could provoke violent retaliation, which could put abducted children at severe risk.
He stated clearly that “no responsible force initiates a shootout when the lives of young girls are on the line.” Instead, rescue teams focus on isolating the victims, negotiating safe passage, or applying tactical pressure to force the criminals to flee without harming their captives.
Intelligence Is the Real Weapon
The ex-commander emphasized that after rescuing the schoolgirls, the next phase involves tracking the kidnappers through intelligence networks, communications data, informants, and surveillance. This method, he said, has led to numerous arrests long after the hostages were freed.
He encouraged the public to understand that rescue operations are not Hollywood missions. Real life requires patience, planning, and prioritizing human life. The goal is always to avoid unnecessary casualties while ensuring that justice eventually catches up with the criminals.
A Call for Support and Cooperation
The retired commander also urged communities to provide timely information to security agencies instead of waiting until kidnappers have gained full control. He added that public cooperation and trust are crucial, as early warnings often prevent abductions entirely.
As Nigeria continues to confront the threat of mass kidnappings, his message remains clear: rescuing the innocent must always come first. Capturing the criminals is essential, but it must never come at the cost of lives.
