Renowned media entrepreneur Ted Turner, the visionary behind one of the world’s most influential news networks, has died at the age of 87. His passing was confirmed in a statement released by Turner Enterprises on Wednesday, marking the end of an era for global journalism.
Turner is best known for founding CNN in 1980, a groundbreaking move that introduced 24-hour news coverage to audiences around the world. At the time, the idea of a continuous news channel was seen as ambitious and unconventional, but it ultimately transformed how people consume information.
According to Turner Enterprises, his innovation redefined journalism by making news accessible in real time across the globe. “Turner’s vision changed journalism forever by making news immediate, global, and constant,” the statement read.
Beyond CNN, Turner built a vast media empire that extended into entertainment and sports. His ventures included the creation of Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, both of which became major players in their respective genres. He also owned the Atlanta Braves, helping to boost the baseball team’s national profile during his tenure.
Industry figures have continued to reflect on his immense contributions, with one former CNN executive describing him as “a once-in-a-generation media pioneer whose influence touched every corner of modern broadcasting.”
Outside of business, Turner was widely respected for his philanthropic efforts and dedication to environmental causes. He made headlines for pledging $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation, supporting global development and humanitarian initiatives. He was also known as one of the largest private landowners in the United States.
His passion for environmental conservation extended into public awareness campaigns, including the creation of the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which educated younger audiences about environmental responsibility.
Turner’s impact was formally recognised in 1991 when Time Magazine named him Man of the Year. The publication praised his ability to reshape public awareness, noting that he “turned viewers into instant witnesses to history.”
After selling a significant portion of his media holdings to Time Warner, Turner gradually stepped away from day-to-day operations. However, he remained closely associated with CNN, often referring to it as his proudest achievement.
In 2018, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a condition that contributed to a gradual decline in his health in later years.
Those who worked closely with him often described him as bold, determined, and unafraid to challenge conventional thinking. “Ted was fearless in his ideas and relentless in pursuing them,” a longtime associate said. “He believed in his instincts when few others did.”
Turner’s death represents the loss of a transformative figure whose innovations reshaped the media landscape. His legacy continues to influence journalism, broadcasting, and global communication, leaving behind a blueprint for how news can connect the world in real time.
