Adams Oshiomhole, the former Governor of Edo State and current Senator of Nigeria, has strongly criticized Rotimi Amaechi, the ex-Governor of Rivers State, calling him a “smuggler” who allegedly exploited former President Muhammadu Buhari’s trust.
In a candid and sensitive interview with Channels Television, Oshiomhole exacerbated the ongoing conflict with Amaechi. He accused Amaechi of leveraging his relationship with Buhari to obtain documents and endorsements that the former President “may not have fully grasped,” suggesting that he was misled into signing certain items.
Oshiomhole also challenged the widely held belief that Amaechi significantly contributed to Buhari’s election win in 2015. He pointed out that despite Amaechi’s role as Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organization, he did not vote in that election, which Oshiomhole considered an obvious contradiction and indicative of questionable loyalty.
Delving deeper into this feud, the senator asserted that Amaechi’s political background is rife with controversies that deserve public scrutiny. He argued that the former minister’s reputation is more that of someone who capitalizes on opportunities rather than one who genuinely serves the nation.
As he put it:
“If you look at his record, he is a smuggler. We are unsure how he managed to get Buhari to sign certain documents for him. I recall during a governors’ meeting when he boasted that Buhari had signed something for him. He took advantage of how little we understood Buhari back then. But my main concern is this: a man who was DG of a presidential campaign but didn’t even cast a vote in the election.”
