Public affairs analyst and lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has stressed that ambassadorial appointments must reflect Nigeria’s values, competence, and integrity. His remarks, shared in a recent Arise News interview, come amid renewed public debate over the latest ambassadorial list submitted by President Tinubu.
Effiong explained that an ambassador is more than a political appointee — the person becomes the face of Nigeria before the international community. According to him, nominating someone for such a position sends a message about the kind of country Nigeria is and who can best represent its image abroad.
He noted that ambassadors carry the nation’s reputation with them, making it essential for nominees to possess credibility, moral character, and strong professional records. Effiong insisted that these standards should guide the president’s selections as well as the Senate’s confirmation process.
The lawyer also cautioned against appointing individuals with controversial public histories or poor performance in previous roles, warning that such decisions could damage Nigeria’s diplomatic standing. He urged lawmakers to carry out thorough screenings to ensure that competence and transparency remain at the forefront.
