Armed bandits return to Eruku community, kidnap farmer days after release of Church members

Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area, Kwara State, has been hit by another armed attack, this time targeting a local farmer, Annas Aasanru. The assault comes just days after 38 church worshippers were released following a five-day captivity.

A community source, who requested anonymity, said four assailants, suspected to be Fulani/Bororo men armed with AK-47 rifles and cutlasses, seized Aasanru from a farmland along the route to Koro before fleeing into the surrounding forest. The attack has left residents alarmed and anxious, highlighting the persistent insecurity in the region.

The Kwara State Police Command, through spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the abduction. She noted that the Eruku Police Division received the report around 2:00 p.m., stating that the farmer, 40, was kidnapped at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Security forces responded swiftly, with a coordinated team of police, soldiers, and local vigilantes deployed to locate and rescue Aasanru. Ejire-Adeyemi emphasized that the search operation is ongoing and being treated with urgency. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to aid the rescue.

The repeated attacks have sparked growing calls for enhanced security measures in rural communities to prevent further kidnappings.
