“Banditry Is Thriving Because It’s a Low-Risk Business That Is Highly Profitable” — Dr Majeed Dahiru

Public Affairs Analyst Dr. Majeed Dahiru has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, warning that banditry continues to thrive because the system makes crime low-risk and highly lucrative for criminals. He highlighted that weak security structures and limited government action have allowed violent groups to operate freely in rural communities.

Speaking in a radio interview, Dr. Dahiru explained, “Banditry is thriving because it’s a low-risk business that is highly profitable.” He described how armed gangs invade villages, abduct residents, and demand ransoms, using the proceeds to purchase more weapons and expand their operations.

Criticising the government’s response to the national security emergency, he noted that abductions, killings, and kidnappings persist with little disruption, leaving citizens vulnerable and frustrated. “Despite the emergency declaration, nothing has changed on the ground,” he said.

Dr. Dahiru called for a new approach to combating banditry, stressing the need to empower local communities as the first line of defence. He proposed establishing a structured volunteer corps within the civil defence system, composed of community vigilantes and ex-servicemen, capable of responding immediately to attacks before conventional forces arrive.

He further warned that without stronger measures, the situation could worsen. “The blood money has become a fix for them,” he said, underscoring that criminals are emboldened by minimal resistance and high financial gains. Dr. Dahiru urged the government to make banditry “high-risk and less profitable” through decisive action, improved security strategy, and support for local communities.
