Former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has raised concerns about recent arrests involving opposition figures, saying Ghana’s democracy and freedom of speech could be in danger.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the New Patriotic Party flagbearer accused the ruling National Democratic Congress of using intimidation against political opponents.
Dr. Bawumia pointed to the arrest and detention of some NPP members, including the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, and constituency organiser David Essando.
He said these incidents show what he described as a continuous attack on people’s fundamental rights.
According to him, “These attacks, arrests, detentions, and unconscionable bail conditions have been a persistent feature,” adding that such actions threaten free speech and could damage Ghana’s democratic progress.
Dr. Bawumia also claimed that some people within the executive arm of government, state investigative agencies, and parts of the judiciary were working together to target opposition supporters.
He said the situation appears to be an effort to silence opposing views and warned that those abusing state power would one day be held responsible.
“I serve notice that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of state power will be accounted for,” he said.
The former Vice-President encouraged supporters of the NPP and the general public to stay strong and continue demanding accountability from the government.
“We fought hard for this democracy and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation,” he stated.
His comments come at a time of growing political tension following several arrests connected to alleged false publication and offensive conduct.
The developments have sparked public debate over the balance between maintaining national security and protecting freedom of expression.
Government authorities, however, say the actions are necessary to fight misinformation and maintain public order, although critics believe the measures could limit open political discussion.
